5 Things I Think
  • I think this dude is taking superhero movies even more seriously than comic book fans take superhero movies.

  • Do you think NBC screened Jay Leno's studio audience for his first night back to the Tonight Show to make sure there weren't any Conan sympathizers planning on causing a disruption?

    I do.

And I expect NBC will continue to do it for a few weeks.

  • Someone recently said that I remind them of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. I guess I should embrace the comparison and start dressing like him too.

  • Even though my interest waned a bit during the second week (expect for the hockey), I still miss not having the Olympics on every night after dinner.

  • Seems like Chuck E. Cheese has turned into the Mos Eisley cantina of the real world.

Hardly seems like a week doesn't go by where that "establishment" isn't in the news for one bizarre reason or another. Be it the drunken brawls or abandoned kids, I can't imagine ever going back there.

    5 Things I Think
  • The most nauseating food concoction idea ever comes to us via the Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, MI which is polling its fans on what new food item should be added to the menu in 2010.
"Twinkie Cheese Dog - This dog can survive any disaster and it might cause a few of its own. Simple - a hot dog laid in a Twinkie covered in cheese. Yum"
The Pink Panther sounds fairly disgusting also.

  • More food fun for thought: If you redesign the shape of a hot dog, is it still a hot dog?

  • In a recent blog post, Stephen Pastis recounts how he would spend the time riding in the backseat of the car on long trips - imaging a man skiing through the fields on the side of the road.

A number of people are commenting on the post and admitting that they used to do that when they were a kid.

I read his post and thought, "Hell, I still do that. Except my guys rides a motorcycle, not a pair of skis."

  • It always astounds me that teachers can have kids read fun, engaging books and then test the hell out of them on the book and the kids still come out the other end loving the book.

I guess it speaks to the power of a good book.

  • I still can't quite reconcile these two stories.

Oswego chalks up a 3rd high school for 2014
"A third high school could cost up to $100 million, and District 308 has the money, thanks a successful $450 million building referendum measure in 2006. It could also cost the district an estimated $2 million in additional operations and personnel costs to open the building."
    with this:

Facing $5.5 million deficit, Oswego schools plan to cut 87 jobs

I understand that money raised for a building referendum cannot be used for an operating budget, but if the school district is tight on operating cash with only 2 high schools open what makes them think they can properly staff and run a third high school?

    5 Things I Think - Olympic Edition
  • I think Tim Ryan is the voice of the Olympics for me - at least the alpine events at the Olympics

I know he's done plenty of sports announcing, but if I'm in a room and hear his voice I immediately think "downhill racing."

  • What did pairs figure skaters skate to before the late 1960s?

I only ask because it seemed like every couple I saw or overheard the music for last night was skating to a song from the late 1960's or 1970's.

  • What do the other countries do for Olympic television coverage?

Every other country in the world doesn't want to watch NBC's coverage of the games and if every country had cameras at the Olympics for televising the events then there wouldn't be much space left for the participants or spectators.

  • I think I bring this up every four years when there is a winter Olympics, but I absolutely love curling.

It's on today. I plan on watching.

  • The fact that the Smithe Brothers use curling in their latest furniture commercial is just one of the reasons I think this Olympic-themed spot is fantastic.

The other being that he rides an ottoman down the curling sheet

    5 Things I Think
  • I think J. Caleb Mozzocco shares my opinion about what really makes a Batman - Ra's al Ghul showdown epic.

  • I think it's bloody perfect that not only was it Dave Letterman's idea to get Oprah AND Jay Leno for his 15-second spot during the Super Bowl, but that he wrote the spot himself.

Dave still knows funny and knows how to be entertaining.

  • Speaking of the Super Bowl, I think I found Greg Kot succinctly pulls together why I was less than thrilled with the halftime show: "Their set list played like a compendium of TV commercials from the last decade as much as a classic-rock primer: snippets of 'Pinball Wizard,' 'Baba ORiley,' 'Who Are You,' 'See Me, Feel Me,' and 'Wont Get Fooled Again.'"

    Yawnsville.

  • Last week the Naperville City Council passed an ordinance that bans throwing candy during parades. It's a ban I thought was already in place. When we marched with my Dad in the 2009 St. Pat's Day parade organizers were all about the "NO THROWING CANDY!" rule.

In any event, I think the City Council should be worried less about the mythical bodily harm that come of thrown candy (Someone claims a piece of candy drew blood after it struck the wife of a city official - must have thrown a box of rock candy) and more about how the practice of passing out candy has turned parades into greedy dashes by little kids for free crap.

  • I think I see a trip to McDonald's in my future sometime around the last week of February.

    5 Things I Think
  • It dawned on my over the weekend that 1989 was 20 years ago TWENTY YEARS AGO and it hardly feels much more than 10 years back. I still dont think Ive got my head wrapped around that yet.

  • I think one sub-layer of the Jay Leno / Conan O'Brien fiasco one that probably indicates which 'team' you gravitated to - is about Baby-Boomers not realizing that they are no longer the arbiters of pop-culture.

  • I think it doesn't matter when or where the NFL plays the Pro Bowl - no one cares about the game.

  • During a visit recently to my Grandpa's and Grandma's condo, my Grandpa not only was pushing ice cream as a treat for Ian, Emma, and Zoe, he was following the ice cream up with cans of Coca-Cola (much to my Grandma's vocal disapproval)

By birth, my Grandpa is already Ian's Great-Grandpa. But I think serving ice cream AND pop at the same time makes my Grandpa Great to Ian.

  • I think TCM finally found a way to NOT impress me.

Heather gave me a subscription to their "Now Playing" guide for my birthday last November. I received the first issue a few weeks back.

I knew the monthly magazine was mainly a guide to all the programming on the channel, but I guess I was expecting a little more editorial than what is actually published. Overall it's a disappointment.

    5 Things I Think
  • Maybe if I saw the movie I would think differently, but based on everything Ive read and seen Im just not that interested in James Camerons film Avatar.

In fact, I was surprised it won the Golden Globe last week. I dont recall gushing reviews over the film.

Is it really that good? I don't understand all the buzz around this film.

  • I was just thinking this over the weekend.

Zoe will make a mistake and exclaim "Oh, poop" and Heather and I don't bat an eye.

But if Zoe uttered an "Oh, shit" we would probably give her hell.

Semantically the two proclamations are the same, but our reactions are so dramatically different.

  • I thought the appearance of Robin in his Earth-2 togs just another fantastic twist in the always outrageously fun Batman: The Brave and The Bold cartoon.

That show is a blast to watch.

  • Every time a NFL football game goes into overtime I cant help but think that the NFL has the worst overtime rules in all of organized sport.

The game is essentially decided by a coin flip.

  • I think there are few things tastier than chocolate and peanut combined together.

And one of the best ways to combine the two is in a confection referred to as "Buckeyes"

    5 Things I Think
  • Nothing ruins a good three-day weekend like a stomach virus that systematically works its way from family member to family member in our house.

It started with Zoe Friday night and ended with Heather on Monday night. In between it hit Emma, Ian, and me.

    Oy!

  • The Jack Kirby sure could draw. At this point Ive read and seen enough of his work to know and appreciate the genius of Jack Kirby.

However, this artwork started making the rounds on the inter-webs over the weekend and it made stop and marvel again at the wickedly trippy design skills of Jack Kirby. The art samples are designs for a college production of Julius Caesar in 1969 that Jack Kirby worked on.

    Wow.

  • I cant wait for this to air during the Super Bowl:

Nothing like milking your one season of domination for as long as you can.

  • Im trying to figure out how this guy got himself into this situation.

Ballboy Has Accident on Court, Delays Match

If youre old enough to serve as a ball boy at the Australian Open shouldnt you be old enough to gauge when you will need to use the restroom?

  • I miss the old Pac-Man cartoon show that I used to watch on Saturday mornings.

Its not on DVD yet, but you can find plenty of samplings on YouTube.

    5 Things I Think

  • What do you think it means when in a dream youre having about starting a new job, not only is your mother there to check on you, but Sylvester Stallone stops by and chats up your mother like a old lost friend?

Im not sure if Ill ever be able to stop thinking about that.

  • I think football head coaches (college or pro) who wear those little headsets while the fume up and down the sideline (or stand emotionless with a look of complete passivity if you a Chicago Bears head coach) look totally dorky.

I got to thinking about the now ubiquitous head coach headsets this past weekend while watching the NFL Playoffs and kept seeing the Pepsi Throwback commercials. Wed see Tom Landry and then see Bill Bellicheck. It made me think of watching Joe Paterno prowl the sidelines a few weeks ago in their bowl game.

Sure, having that little communication device on your head might be helpful to keep everybody on the same page, but you look like a dork.

  • What is it about sweaters that make them look so dated. I can pull a shirt or a pair of pants out of my closet that was bought back in the 1990s right now and you may or may not be able to place the garment as clothing from that decade. But as soon as I hold up a sweater someone shouts "1993!"

  • I know that columnists have to turn in a set number of pieces a week of a certain length, but I think David Haugh could have worked a little harder last week.

On Sunday the Chicago Tribune ran a Haugh-penned piece on what might have happened if the Chicago Bears had landed Alabama coach Nick Saban 6 years ago when they offered him the head coaching job.

This is the sort of silly and pointless "What If" writing I expect from fan-run blogs/websites, not that sort of column I go to the Chicago Tribune for.

  • You want a glimpse at what pure happiness looks like?

Catch a 5th grader sinking his first shot in a school basketball game.

The sense of joy is contagious.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think Im thinking a lot about comics a lot more than usual right now. Comic books, comic strips, movies based on comic book characters, animated versions of comic book characters not sure why its dominating my brains free time, but cant say that I'm not enjoying it.

  • Dont know why I didnt think of it earlier the library is perfect for getting more comics to read. I renewed my long lapsed library card last week while I was on vacation, and have already taken inventory of whats on the shelf at our local branch.

I also plan to put our librarys online reserve system to good work this year.

(Sure I'll continue to read traditional books. But I got a stack of those for Christmas and Im looking for new comics to read)

  • I think I would like to have this as a poster for my office (at home or at work)
Best Calvin & Hobbes fan art ever.

    [found here]

  • I think that until the day I die I will still get a thrill out of seeing DC Comic heroes animated.

  • I think it will be great fun reading through this: Batman: The Animated Series Writers Bible

Ive already downloaded the whole document.

    5 Things I Think
  • Ive been thinking about this for four days, and I still dont think it makes any sense.

I can open iTunes on my computer at home right now, buy a song and listen to it without any problem.

However, if I try and take the gift code from one of the albums my brother-in-law got me for Christmas this year, Apple insists I upgrade to the latest version of iTunes.

The problem being the latest version of iTunes wont run on my computer. My iMac only has the hardware to support OS 10.3.9. The latest version of iTunes wants 10.4 or higher.

So to use a code to download an album that has already been paid for in iTunes, Apple says that I have to essentially buy a new computer.

Yet I can buy and download music through iTunes right now without issue.

Whats so special about a gifted album that I need the latest version of iTunes?

  • Pink Floyd just doesnt hold up for me. I remember owning a bunch of Floyd albums when I was in high school, and I loved listening to them.

But should a Pink Floyd song come on the radio today, I will roll my eyes and turn to another station.

The songs sound bloated and self-absorbed.

  • I think having the whole week off from work is relaxing and frustrating.

Relaxing because I dont have to wake up early and drag myself into the office every morning and fight my way through a day only to drag myself home again.

Frustrating because there is so much I would like to do during my time off that I never seem to get to.

  • I expected to barely make it through the first half of last nights Chicago Bears Minnesota Vikings game. Figured it would be a blow-out by the Vikings. Never thought that the Bears would shut the Vikings out in the first half and then hold on to beat Brett Favre in overtime.

The game doesnt change my mind about the team they are still poorly coached and need a new offensive line but it certainly was fun to watch.

  • I thought this was interesting

    5 Things I Think
  • I think I need to hunt down some of the published work of Kevin Huizenga. The more time I spend on his blog the more enamored I come with his work.

  • I want to believe them when James Cameron and Peter Jackson say that they dont let technology dictate the story (certainly Jackson proved that in the Lord of the Rings movies) but when I read this response from Cameron I cant help but think that hes taking a little of the magic out of film with all his computer wizardry.
Cameron: "If I did Titanic today, I'd do it very differently. There wouldn't be a 750-foot-long set. There would be small set pieces integrated into a large CGI set. I wouldn't have to wait seven days to get the perfect sunset for the kiss scene. We'd shoot it in front of a green screen, and we'd choose our sunset."
I guess I still consider film the art of capturing the perfect moment, not creating one.

However I think Jackson nails it on why if I have to have motion-capture in the films I watch, I want him or Cameron handling it and not Polar Express/Christmas Carol director Robert Zemeckis
Jackson: "With Gollum and Kong, the key thing that we did was the eyes. I think Gollum and Kong represented the best eyes that I've seen in a CGI film."
Take a look at a Zemeckis motion-capture film and tell me you see any life in those eyes. Gah.

  • I think the Christmas radio station that plays nothing but Christmas music from the middle of November to December 26th could learn a thing or two on programming from the radio station we stumbled upon while visiting Heathers family in Ohio.

I dont know the Ohio stations name or call letters, but they obviously understood that there are more than 20 Christmas songs that you can be played.

93.9 in Chicago is so tightly programmed with the same songs over and over that you can set your watch by what song is playing. Mariah Carey again? It must be 3pm.

  • I really want to see the Sherlock Holmes film coming out on Christmas Day starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. It looks like fantastic fun. Im surprised I hadnt mentioned that here before.

  • I think this is wild: James May and 1,000 helpers built a 20ft-tall Lego house on a English winery.

The house had running water and a functioning LEGO toilet.

But because LEGO wouldnt take it from him and no private buyers could be found, the house had to be smashed into little broken LEGO bits.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think the timing of DCs newly announced Legacies project really means that copyrights were about to run out on some rarely used characters names and DC wanted to make sure they held onto the rights for a few more years.

  • I think its kinda intriguing how much "Little Secrets" by Passion Pit sounds like an 80s song while still maintaining a contemporary sound. Its like 1986 filtered through 2009

  • I think its a crime that this dog didnt win the America's Cutest Dog and not because the dogs name is Commissioner Gordon

  • For a surreal parenting moment, I dont think anything can top having an existential discussion with your 7-year-old daughter why you help her wash her hair in the bathtub.

For a second grader, Emma is contemplating some pretty intense and heady stuff.

  • Id like to think that there is a Rocky Wirtz hiding somewhere in the McCaskey family but I just cant bring myself to do so.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think DCs new DC Earth One line sounds like a much better idea than the All-Star line they launched a few years back.

DC Earth One sounds like it has better editorial direction from the get-go and only publishing the books as original graphic novels as opposed to first as monthly comics and later as collected editions is the better approach to hit the target appeal group.

  • I know it was meant as a joke, but telling me that my list of Christmas gift ideas full of book and DVD titles is boring to shop from isnt exactly a pick-me-upper.

  • I think Elizabeth Warren needs to have more power in Washington D.C. She seems like the only intelligent, sensible voice I ever hear regarding issues of the economy, the banking bailout plan, etc.

  • I think my favorite part of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas is this song.

  • I think have a functioning radiator and radiator thermostat is a wonderful, wonderful thing. If I had only known two years ago what I learned last Thursday, I could have saved myself two whole winters of suffering in a freezing-cold car.

    5 Things I Think
  • I watched the entire second half of the Notre Dame Stanford game Saturday night. Besides at the end of the game when they showed Charlie Weis and Jim Harbaugh shaking hands, I only saw a shot of Charlie on the sidelines once.

The ESPN/ABC crew gave us plenty of sideline views of ND Quarterback Jimmy Clausen and Standford Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, but only once did we see Charlie Weis. It was almost like ESPN/ABC was going out of their way to not show Charlie on screen.

    I thought that was interesting.

It wasn't like they were ignoring Charlie was there. Brent Musberger talked about him constantly. (Mostly about how this was probably Weis' last game as the Irish's Head Coach) But the ESPN/ABC director would never cut to a shot of Charlie.

  • I think one of the perks of working for a company with its offices in downtown Chicago is enjoying the decorations and celebrations that occur in and around the Christmas season.

Certainly makes going to work a little more fun.

  • I think its sort of cute that Emma and Zoe assume that I get a half-day off from work on the same days that they get a half-day off from school.

I also wish it was true.

  • What do you think it means when it feels like you have a splinter in your finger but you cant find anything?

    It's driving me crazy.

  • I think the Not-Right Nativity scenes being sold on Etsy are hysterical.

My inner-geek makes me pick the Indiana Jones themed one as my favorite,

But funniest one is the barrel of monkeys scene.

    5 Things I Think
  • I dont think I want to talk about football anymore. Between the Bears and the Fighting Irish, this has been a horribly depressing football season.

Its only going to be the Blackhawks from here on out.*

  • In the footer on many pages of the Chicagotribune.com website, there is a section highlighting some of the photos you can find elsewhere on their site.

For the last few weeks they have been using this image for the "Get your Bears on section".
No matter how many times I see it, I always think it's my nephew Declan; even though I have found the original photo which identifies the kid as 6-month-old from Mt. Prospect, IL.

It's starting to drive me a little batty.

  • Nora Jones has a beautiful voice, although I dont care much for her music. However, I cannot not watch her video for Chasing Pirates. I think its the short haircut. She's adorable.

  • We're in the market for a new computer. I've always planned on buying another Mac because I love the simplicity and reliability of the operating system.

Every once and awhile I start thinking it would be cheaper to go with a Dell or HP computer running only Windows, and then the Windows machine I use for work craps out on me again.

I wasted 30 minutes untangling the machine after it had locked up because I moved the laptop from one room to another. I don't care how glorious people might think Windows 7 is. I'm sticking with Mac.

  • As much fun as I had watching 5th and 6th graders playing football, I think 5th grade basketball is even more fun.

I am so glad Ian decided to join his schools basketball team.

    * Who am I kidding. Ill still watch every painful snap of the Bears and Fighting Irish to the bitter end.

    5 Things I Think
  • Just when I am ready to completely write-off the Cartoon Network because of their inability to stay true to their name, they go and do something that makes me think that the stuffed shirts in the boardroom dont all have their heads completely up their asses.

Following up on a seven hour marathon of Looney Tunes cartoons this past Sunday, the Cartoon Network has scheduled an hour-long block of Looney Tunes cartoons every weekday at 10am Central.

Cartoons on Cartoon Network. What a novel idea.

  • A message I can stand behind: Life without cartoons is just life.

I think the people behind the marketing campaign for the Ottawa International Animation Festival understand me.

  • I dont think I will ever learn to enjoy pork chops. Doesnt matter how many different ways they are prepared, I ultimately end up with the same reaction bleh

I enjoy other pork products bacon, ribs, roasts, and sausage.

    What makes the chops different?

  • Considering the depressing state of Chicago football, its nice to have a Blackhawks hockey team on the rise. In fact, I think the best sports news Ive heard in the last few weeks is this:
Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith close to new contracts

  • I thought this was funny:

    5 Things I Think
  • I think it is fantastic that my godmother/aunt continues to send me a birthday card with a cash money gift enclosed equally how old I am turning.

This year I received a card with $37 included.

Considering my aunts personality, love of life, and her own parents (my grandparents) longevity, Im thinking I will celebrate my 60th birthday by receiving a card from her with three twenties inside.

  • I know everyone in Chicago was all a-twitter over the 70-degree weather that descended upon the region this past weekend, but I think there is something inherently wrong about wearing a t-shirt and shorts in November in Northern Illinois.

Al Gore better fix things fast.

  • After the success we had renting and using a Rug Doctor this past weekend, I can't imagine us going back to paying someone to come in and clean our carpets.

Same price it cost me to have a service come once, I can easily clean the same space twice on my own.

I wish we had thought of this sooner.

  • I think I had forgotten how much I enjoy Kelley Jones' work on Batman. At random I pulled the three-part Batman-Deadman team-up story done by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones in Batman #530-532 from the summer of 1996 out of my collection and have been reading it this week.

What fantastic, dynamic art Jones creates. Sure, he has some difficultly in keeping some characters looking the same from panel to panel, but that doesnt matter in the end. I can let things like that pass so I can enjoy the moody and energetic pages Kelley Jones produces.

  • I would have thought that something like this would have been tried sooner.

But regardless of when it was thought of, it will always be a stupid idea.

    5 Things I Think
  • First thing I thought of when I saw the title to this article in the Chicago Tribune: "I wonder if 'get a new offensive line' counts as 5 or 1?"
Chicago Tribune: "Top 10 ways for offense to improve"

  • I dont think I'll ever understand kids.

For weeks Ian and Emma begged and pleaded with me to not put up the giant inflatable Scooby-Doo wearing a witch hat at Halloween. They were "so embarrassed" by it and wanted to know why couldnt we have "scary decorations" like other people on the block.

So I didn't put him up.

(Zoe, and avid fan of Scooby, was surprising quiet)

Then three days before Halloween all three kids are asking me when I'm putting Scooby up.

"I thought Scooby wasnt cool. I thought you were too old for Scooby."

"No," the all adamantly responded, "It won't be Halloween without Scooby!"

So there I was, Saturday morning, putting Halloween Scooby up for one day.

  • I think workpoop.com is a wickedly wonderful idea.

  • I can cross this item off my to-do list: Plan extraordinary 25th wedding anniversary for 2020

I'm going to book a room at The Galactic Suite Space Resort, which plans to open for business in 2012.

    5 Things I Think
  • Dont tell Heather, but the only reason I will stop and watch Project Runway with her is to see Heidi Klum.

  • I think the use of the term "truly" has reached an over-saturation point. It shows up everywhere. In peoples speech. In their writing. And it doesnt make sense to me.

Do you have to say, "I am truly happy for this development?" Isn't the fact that you are expressing your happiness over the event proof of your sincerity? Throwing in the "truly" seem redundant and a little silly. I don't think anyone would declare themselves "falsely happy."

  • Does Orin Hatch really believe that of all the things that Congress and the President should be focused on right now, the NCAAs Bowl Championship Series football program belongs on that list?

I mean really. Health care, war, limp economy, and the BCS?

  • I think the whole zombie thing is pretty well played out now. Time to put the zombies away and bring back pirates or ninjas as the pop culture meme of the moment.

  • I think the clean, minimalist designs of Andy Awesomes desktop images are mighty nice.

His Pac-Man image is on my desktop now, though I plan to switch in the Batman & Robin or the fruit desktop.

    5 Things I Think
  • I thought this was unintentionally funny and this was intentionally hysterical

  • Try as I might to not get wrapped up in the H1N1 news, I think it's starting to taint my ability to think rationally.

I'm in the middle of a particularly nasty head cold and I know it's just a head cold but that didn't stop me worrying on the first few days if I didn't have H1N1. Even though I have no fever, chills, aches, or any other symptom of the flu, I couldn't help but wonder if I should be sequestering myself away from the kids.

All I've got is a running nose.

  • I think no matter how many times I do it, I will never get a ceiling painted in a way I am satisfied with.

Why is painting the ceiling so difficult?

  • Okay, now I don't think Im happy for Kyle Orton any more. The Bears were supposed to be the 6-0 team. Not the Broncos.

  • I think there is something gratifying and calmly about writing with a good pencil. Not those crappy mechanical pencils or cheapo quasi-wood #2s. I'm talking about a quality pencil made from real cedar wood encasing dense graphite. You can feel the lines being put to the paper with the slightest scratching noise. It feels so much more natural and true then writing with a pen or typing on a keyboard. It's almost cathartic.

    5 Things I Think
  • Having parents who are dating ( and not each other) is one of the most hysterical and frustrating things ever.

  • It took us a few years, but I think Heather and I finally found a great apple orchard.

Heinz Orchard, just outside of Libertyville, IL, is a no frills orchard. Theyre all about the apples and the experience of picking your own apples.

No petting zoos, corn mazes, or carnival rides.

We filled up 2.5 pecks of apples and now look forward to a few weeks of homemade apple sauce, apple pies, sauted apples, and anything else Heather can figure out how to use apples.

  • Im happy for Kyle Orton and glad he's having success. I was always a fan of his when he was with the Bears, and I guess Im still a fan of his now that hes with the Broncos. Im glad to see that the trade is working out for him too. (At least so far)

  • Ketchup flavored potato chips? Do people actually eat these?

Someone made a comment about them and I thought it was a joke. But apparently they are real and a bunch of different companies produce them: ketchup flavored chips

  • I think its brilliant that Dark Horse is making the entire Charles Vess art book Drawing Down The Moon: The Art of Charles Vess available for preview.

What better way to lure people in and drive up interest in an artbook than letting people see the whole book online. You get teased with page after page of gorgeous Vess art, but its all stuck on your computer screen. Buy the book and see every page in full printed glory.

    5 Things I Think
  • There is a guy who I often see on the train heading home at night. By how sweaty he is whenever he boards the train, it is obvious that he runs most of the way from his office to the train station.

I wonder if the sweaty dude will ever figure out he only heats himself up more with all the fanning and shirt flapping he does to try and cool himself off.

Guy is just crazy about flapping his copy of the Financial Times in front of his face for the first five minutes of the train ride.

  • I havent really watched anything on Turner Classic Movies for about a month now and Im sort of craving an old movie. Particularly something made late 40s.

  • I would have thought that with those horrific lime green jerseys on it would be impossible for the Bears defenders to miss the Seattle Seahawks. Yet the Bears were missing tackles all day.

There was no reason for Julius Jones to have that long TD run at the beginning of the game.

I like how the pass rush is pressuring quarterbacks, but without good tackling and defense is no good.

  • I think Pearls Before Swine creator Stephan Pastis provides a unique argument for why we get the government we deserve

  • I was recently asked, "What's the one place you havent been to that you really want to visit?"

My immediate gut response was Ireland. But the more I think about the question, the more I think that "New England to see the fall foliage" might be a very close #2.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think Im going to make Ian, Emma, and Zoe start reading Kafka

"The key to our study is that our participants were surprised by the series of unexpected events, and they had no way to make sense of them. Hence, they strived to make sense of something else."

  • I think DC and Warner Brothers are doing an outstanding job of adapting DC characters in their animated films. The next DCU animated movie is shaping up to be Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.

I wish I could keep up with these. In just this year alone we've had new animated films staring Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and a Superman/Batman team-up in Public Enemies.

  • Heather called me on this this the other morning: I think Im jealous that now that all the kids are in school all day she has a tremendous amount of freedom to do whatever she wants during the hours of 8am and 3pm.

Me. Im stuck in an office.

  • I think I just found the website for all my Christmas shopping this year: http://www.80stees.com/

And maybe Ill buy myself this one or this one or this one . . .

  • I think its fun that Ian just like I was when I was 10 years-old is a root beer guy. Hes always asking for root beer first, then checking down to some other form of pop if root beer isnt available.

Is this preference for root beer a 10 year-old thing? A boy thing? A 10 year-old McKillip boy thing?

Dont know, but it does make we want to buy a bunch of different varieties of root beers and hold our own little tasting party.

    5 Things I Think
  • Nothing says "too little, too late" quite like going 9 4 for the first half of September when your team is 9.5 behind the division leading Cardinals and 6.5 back in the Wild Card race.

    Thank you Chicago Cubs.

  • I learned this week that we have The Complete Mother Goose in our home library. Who knew?

Zoe asked me to read some of them to her before bed last night. Im familiar with the standards, so I went deep into the collection to read the more obscure nursery rhymes.

And there are a bunch of them.

    I think my favorite is:

    "Shave a Pig"
    Barber, barber, shave a pig,
How many hairs will make a wig?
    Four-and-twenty, thats enough,
Give the barber a pinch of snuff.

  • Kanye West may have an out-sized ego and a big mouth, but I think his rude behavior at award shows might have as much to do with that as with his choice pre-show refreshment.

  • I think people who bring leftover fish to work to eat for lunch should be strongly encouraged to eat their lunch outside and required to bring their own microwave for heating it up.

Few things curdle my stomach like opening a microwave that has recently been used for re-heating day old fish.

  • I think I prefer a day spent digging up my front yard in order to re-landscape it (even with the accompanying all-over body ache the next day) over a day spent working in an office.

    5 Things I Think
  • I dont follow twitter feeds, but this one was brought to my attention and checked it out.

    Shit My Dad Says

It could possibly be the funniest collection of quotes I have ever read.
I dont know if these are all legitimate quotes or not but I dont care. They are damn funny.

  • Two weeks into the school year and the amount of paper in our house has increased ten-fold.

Youd think the teachers and administrators at our kids school were getting a kick-back from the paper industry.

  • Based on the write-ups its received, you would think The Beatles: Rock Band was the actual second coming of the lads from Liverpool.

    Really.

Just pick a news story about the video game and start reading people cant heap enough praise on the game.

While I dont doubt that the game is probably tons of fun and I know The Beatles music is timeless, I cant help but think that the glowing response has less to do with the craft in the game and more to do with people finally stopping and listening to the bands music. Something they could have done without dropping a bunch of cash down for a game.

Then again, that might be the point of the game. Put the music where the most people are for the biggest exposure possible.

  • Sure glad everyone got all up-in-arms over the President giving a speech to school children. Weeks of people shouting and protesting about potential speech topics and agendas and in the end the POTUS ends up speaking on taking responsibility for yourself, your education, and your actions in life, not wasting your time away in front of the TV, and how important an education will be in your future life.

    Yeah, that was productive.

  • I think the new Batgirl costume is quite good. Considering the character's history, the purple is nice touch.

    5 Things I Think
  • Marvel Entertainment being bought out by Disney was the big news yesterday (at least in the comic book blogs/news sites I frequent) and rightfully so. Having the House of Ideas become part of the House of Mouse will dramatically change how Marvels stable of characters are handled and could have an impact on the comic book industry as well.

Spidey-mouseHeidi Macdonald, over at The Beat, does what I think is the best round-up with commentary on what this merger means.

If you read all the statements and press releases, it sounds like Disney is interested in buying their way into the wallets of males a market they havent been able to reach consistently through their own characters and properties but will continue to let Marvel create stories and comics independently of Disney's influence. Disney wants Marvel characters for their movie/TV/animation/video game potential.

Hopefully Disney will continue to allow Marvel to do what they do best produce comics and not try to meddle with that as well. Essentially I hope the relationship between Marvel and Disney ends up being like how Disney has handled Pixar since absorbing that company into their ranks. Pixar is still free to create the wonder animated films free of Mickeys corporate overlords, and Disney jumps in to make their dough via merchandising and licensing of the art Pixar produced.

Im a DC Comics man myself and have a limited interest in the Marvel universe of characters, but I would hate to see Captain America and his friends mishandled like Jim Hensons Muppets were when Disney purchased them so many years ago.

  • Do you think my sister would get mad if I gave my nephew this as birthday gift?

  • Today is the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II. To commemorate the event, one of Life.coms editors put together a slide show of WWII propaganda artwork that the different nations involved in the war produced to try and win over the minds of the people.

I think propaganda art is a fascinating way to study history. It helps take you beyond the facts of the events and get inside the heads of the people affected by the events.

  • I would like to hear from Mayor Daley how shutting down three blocks of Michigan Avenue in the heart of Chicago for 2 days so Oprah Winfrey can tape an episode of her TV show outside on the sidewalk will specifically create jobs for the city other than temporarily clean-up crews after everyone has left.

  • While I think these t-shirts are on the mark with their commentary, I dont think I would wear one because I would be forever explaining the jab.

    5 Things I Think
  • It never fails to astound me how loud people will play their headphones. Rode the train home the other day and it was like being stuck between two dance clubs - lots of bad looping drum machines and the stench of body order.

    People are stupid.

  • Why do so few people like liverwurst?

I know its a horrible name, but it is very tasty.

I think you should give it a try.

  • I thought advertisers had reached the apex of annoying with their in-show pop-up TV ads, until I saw this story on Wired last week.

CBS Embeds a Video Playing Ad in a Print Magazine

Not only does it play every time you open to that page theres no volume control. It just plays really, really loud.

  • The Movie Title Stills Collection is a wonderful way to kill time.

Its interesting to note how the designs reflect the time periods stylistically as much as they reflect the film they introduce.

  • Empire Magazines listing of the 50 Greatest Movie Sequels is a lot of fun to read through.

I liked that they featured Batman Returns (#13) which Ive come to regard as the better of the Tim Burton-helmed Batman films.

I found their Top 10 particular interesting, but was shocked that The Godfather II was not ranked #1. I wont ruin the surprise go read it for yourself but I think the Empire staff makes a good argument for why they chose the film that they did for #1.

    5 Things I Think
  • Keith Morrison worst. TV news person. Ever.

I run from the room when I hear his voice.

The man cant just report on his story, he has to make it into some sort of lame Lifetime movie plot.

  • The couches in our family room are getting pretty beat up (damn kids its why we cant have nice things).

But I think I found the perfect replacement couch.

I think Heather will love it

  • I think its silly to pass judgment on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler after one pre-season game, but damn 6 for 10, an INT, and 3 points?

I didnt think I was buying too heavily into the Cutler-Will-Save-Us frenzy that has been whipped up in Chicago, but I was particularly underwhelmed by that performance. So maybe I am.

  • Saw a guy reading this magazine on the train the other day and I almost pee'd my pants I laughed so hard at the title or maybe that should be "I almost crappie'd my pants."

Not the exact cover I saw - but close enough
I know Im tweaking the pronunciation for a cheap laugh, but come on . . .

  • I think Bill Murray is the best celebrity sports fan out there. The guy demonstrates a genuine love and knowledge of Chicago sports teams, even so far as to show up at road games.

    5 Things I Think
  • Has anyone done an acoustic version of "Back In Black" by AC/DC? I think that would be interesting to hear- and Im not an AC/DC fan. I like the opening riff to that song and think it might sound better acoustic.

  • I wonder if Patrick Kane beating up a cabbie over $0.20 is a sign of tougher, more physical hockey playing Kane or a drunk, stupid 20 year-old?

My guess: drunk, stupid 20 year-old.

  • I cant think of a more versatile and consistently excellent actor than Cary Grant. I was reminded of that this past Sunday when TCM featured the actors films.

The man did all sorts of movie goofball comedy, romantic comedy, suspense, drama and was always excellent and believable in them.

  • I think it is amazing (and slightly disturbing) that amount of grown adults who never grasped the bigger lesson behind their parents asking the question, "If your friend was jumping off a bridge, would you?"

  • Ian starts organized football through his school this week. I don't think Heather and I or he fully understands what's about to happen to us.

I'm curious to see how things play out once practices and games start up, but the build up to this point has been a lot of fun.

    5 Things I Think
  • Reading this article makes me want to take a day off of work, head over to the Art Institute of Chicago, and spend an afternoon sketching.

  • ESPN is producing a documentary about Steve Bartman the poor guy who reached to catch a foul ball in Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship series between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins.

According to ESPN, the purpose of the documentary which will probably not feature Steve Bartman is to answer the question, "Can Bartman ever forgive Chicago?"

I wonder when ESPN and other sports media will come to understand that this isn't a story anymore. It was interesting for about 15 minutes because Moises Alou threw a tantrum about missing the ball and childishly blamed Bartman. Since then I think everyone understands that this one misplayed foul ball didnt ruin the Cubs' chances of getting to the World Series, it was the poor play by the Cubs after that foul ball and in Game 7 that doomed the Cubs.

Bartman only remains a story because outfits like ESPN keep bringing it up.

The question I think should be asked is, "Can Bartman ever forgive ESPN for making more out of this than anyone else is actually interested in?"

  • I love stories like this: Organic food not healthier, study finds

Of course next month there will be a study showing that people who eat only organically grown food live, on average, 13.2 years longer, earn 11% more than non-organic eaters in the same jobs, and routinely experience multiple organisms while riding their Vespas.

    Doesn't matter to me. I like Ho-Hos.

  • I wonder how much longer Lou will tolerate Carlos Marmols horrible pitching.

The guy simply cant throw strikes. Every time I see him go out to the mound I want to turn the game off. I dont want to deal with the stress.

  • Finished reading Echo Park by Michael Connelly yesterday. It was a book I picked up at the library used book sale for a $1. I recognized Connellys name as a popular crime/suspense writer and thought I would give him a try.

The book was interesting enough. Well plotted and thick on police procedural. However he lost points with me because he wrote a story that made too many assumptions about the readers existing knowledge of previous Connelly-penned books starring the same character.

I understand that Echo Park was like the fifth or sixth book featuring Detective Harry Bosch of the LAPD, but even your fifth or sixth book is still somebody elses first book.

    5 Things I Think
  • Where I work currently is the first company I've been at that actually has offices for people to work in. Everywhere I've been it's been about cubicles. Everybody was in cubicles. Even the CEO was in a cubicle

(Okay, two exceptions. One, at Progressive Insurance they had offices, but I was there less than 9 months and hated it so I rarely count that as a place I worked. Two, at the first company I worked for we had offices, but we would cram 2 or 3 people into each one.)

Anyways now I'm being moved into an office this week and I think I feel a little guilty about having an office. Not exactly sure why.

  • I think I've found the application that will finally convince Heather that I should buy an iPhone.

    Or maybe not

  • It's the end of July already? I think this summer is going by way too fast. I've only complained about the humidity once since the end of May.

  • Actually, I know weve hit the second half of the summer because Turner Classic Movies is preparing its annual Summer Under the Stars film festival. They only have a small preview site up now, but it includes some wonderful newly imaged movie posters for classic films.

I think my favorite poster is the one for High Society. Though the poster for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is a close second.

    TCM poster for High Society

  • My latest favorite song is "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes" by Art Brut. Discovered the band via an episode of Sound Opinions.

The bands latest album was produced by former Pixies front man Frank Black and the songs reflect Franks stripped down, straightforward style of music I really enjoy.

And who cant love lyrics like this:
    DC comics and chocolate milkshake
Some things will always be great
    DC comics and chocolate milkshake
    Even though I'm 28

    5 Things I Think
It's a special Family Vacation edition of "5 Things I Think"

Last week Heather and I loaded the kids into our van and drove over 1,200 miles to Port Canaveral, FL so we could board the Disney Wonder for a 5-day cruise with her family.

When we were done with the cruise, we drove back stopping one day in Chattanooga, TN.

5 Things I Thought About the Drive There and Back Again

  • The Louisville Bats is one the best baseball team names Ive seen in a long time

  • I dont think the radio stations south of Macon, GA play anything other than Country Music and Classic Rock. I honestly heard the exact same Doobie Brothers song being played on 3 different radio stations at the same time.

  • Im not sure what to think about the massage/spa parlors being advertised along the expressway in southern Georgia. Most of the billboards use photos of slutted-up Asian women and proudly declare "Lots of Truck Parking!" The exception being the massage place that promised "American Asian - Latino"

Although, the ads for these "spas" did break up the monotony of seeing another Cracker Barrel billboard.

  • At a stop in Tennessee Florida has the stupidest tollway system. They have a turnpike you pay to enter as opposed to exit. They also have a tollway that doesn't appear to have any logic to where toll booths are placed or the amount charged. Then they have two different E-ZPass type systems one for the turnpike and one for the tollway and nether is compatible with the E-ZPass system being used by 13 other States.

    I hate Florida's roads.

  • Driving through Kentucky and Tennessee is so much more interesting than our standard runs through Illinois/Indiana/Ohio, if for no other reason than getting to travel through the mountains down into the Tennessee River Valley area. The kids loved the views as did Heather and I.

It made me want to take a driving trip out to the Smoky Mountains

5 Things I Thought About the Disney Cruise

  • I think either the sun is lot hotter in the Caribbean or my hair is getting thinner, because I'm fairly certain I burned the top of my head slightly.

  • I don't know how much the Disney entertainers are paid but I hope it's a lot. There were shows held outside on the deck stage where they were performing in 90-degree heat under a blazing hot sun in their uniforms or dressed up like some Disney characters singing, dancing, and jumping around. You could see the sweat pouring off of them. Their faces were like little red pimples ready to burst.

I couldn't figure out how they didn't pass out from heat exhaustion.

And yet the danced and sang and kept a huge Disney smile the entire time.

    Maybe they're heavily drugged.

  • the kids pose with Daisy Duck on Castaway Cay The Trio best dessert idea ever. Every night at dinner there would be a number of dessert options to choose from. The one I noticed the first night, and then enjoyed on subsequent nights, was the Trio. It was a sampling of three of the desserts all on one plate.

Why have to lock yourself into choosing just one tasty treat when you could enjoy three.

  • When you can't get your mask to fit right, snorkeling is a lot harder than you think. I spent as much time blowing water out of my nose as I did exploring the snorkeling trails Disney built on their private island Castaway Cay

  • Disney/Pixar's UP was screened one night of the cruise. An excellent movie funny, touching, and poignant. I don't think Pixar knows how to make a bad film. They proved once again that if you focus on developing a compelling story keep that the main focus of the film you are producing the end product will always be entertaining.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think its sort of funny that the box on the LEGO Architecture model kit for the Sears Tower clearly says "Sears Tower", but if you buy it at the LEGO store (like my brother-in-law did for me last week - thanks!) the receipt says "Willis Tower."

  • It's not a real billboard somewhere, but I think it is fantastic.
What air rifles were made for

It's a technique I'd love to employee except that all the tree-hugging, pinko, namby-pandies who live in our neighborhood would probably complain.

  • I seems like faced with the idea of celebrating the achievements of the first 30 years of his life or considering the events / behavior of the second 20 years of his life, it appears most people want to dwell on the first 30 years of Michael Jackson's life.

I am not comfortable with that.

  • Do you think I need to be worried if I read this in a contract that I am asked to sign before boarding a cruise ship?
THE CARRIER DOES NOT EXPRESSLY OR IMPLIEDLY WARRANT, AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY WARRANTY AS TO, (a) THE FITNESS, CONDITION OR SEAWORTHINESS OF THE VESSEL AND (b) THE FITNESS, CONDITION OR MERCHANTABILITY OF ANY FOOD OR DRINK PROVIDED ON BOARD THE VESSEL. THE CARRIER SHALL NOT BE STRICTLY LIABLE IN TORT FOR ANY DEFECT, LACK OF FITNESS, IMPURITY OR CONTAMINATION OF ANY FOOD OR DRINK PROVIDED ON BOARD THE VESSEL.
They wont warrant the seaworthiness of the vessel? Its a fucking boat for taking around 2,000 people out into the ocean. How can they even try to indemnify themselves from seaworthiness of the vessel?

    Lawyers? Please speak up.

  • When did parades become about seeing how much candy you could haul in?

I was shocked when we started taking the kids to the Aurora Fourth of July parades about how much candy was throw to the crowd and how much the kids expected it. Now when our kids talk about going to the parade they mention candy as much as the things in the parade.

And since Ive started walking with my Dad in a few parades to help support his campaign, Ive learned that some cities kids are better behaved than others when it comes to candy expectations.

Warrenville has some well-mannered, fun kids at their parades.

Naperville has a lot of work to do.

    5 Things I Think
  • Want to make sure everybody marks their calendars: Nude Recreation Week (July 5-11, 2009)

  • I know this may seem a little pathetic, but one of the things I enjoy about the summer is that with school out and people vacationing, my drive to the train station in the morning can be 5 to 10 minutes shorter than between September and May.

I can take a little more time in the morning. Sleep in a little more. Have a less annoying drive.

    It's the little things.

  • I think its about time that the astronauts in the International Space Station got themselves a proper window to look out through.

    The Cupola

The Cupola will be part of the Tranquility node that will be installed in early 2010 and will provide astronauts a unique view outside of the space station.

  • I think I hear more about Mark DeRosa now that hes not a Cub.

Lets get over it. I agree that in hindsight the trade is looking bad right now, but I grow tired of the fawning over DeRosa that still goes on in this town.

  • I watched Cecil B. DeMilles 1952 film, The Greatest Show on Earth, last night. It won Oscars for Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay, which I think qualifies The Greatest Show on Earth as one of the strangest Oscar winners of all time.

The film was certainly big in a DeMille sort of way, and fun to watch especially the parts where the film dealt with the real ins and outs of running a circus. But I cant understand how the Academy handed the award to The Greatest Show with all its camp and non-existent plot when it had High Noon or The Quiet Man to also choose from that year.

  • There probably was a guy responsible for rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, and it was probably pretty important to him that it get done.

Wasnt his fault the ship was doomed to sink.

I think we should all stop using that poor guy's job description as a put down for futile tasks

  • If it's already 90 degrees in June, whats it going to be like in August?

I'm not sure I want to find out.

  • Do you think she had to work at looking both seductively sexy and playfully innocent at the same, or did it come naturally?

marilyn monroe picture I stumbled across recently

I think Marilyn was a once in a century type of beauty. She could do it all because that's what she was born to do.

  • Two Ph.D. candidates in political science at Columbia University investigate the possibility of a fraudulent Iranian Presidential election in an interesting way focusing on people's inability to come up with good random numbers.

I think the study is fascinating.

  • Even though Heather was the one who had been requesting it, out of the two of us I think I am enjoying Wii Fit more and that totally surprises me. I am making efforts to use Wii Fit regularly and I am even putting together my own workout plans to maximize my 30 minutes in the morning.

I know sports figures and celebrities will proudly declare that they don't read any of the press written about them, but I think in this case Favre should pay attention to what people are writing/saying about him. He's becoming a punchline to a joke you don't even have to mention. Favre had a Hall of Fame career in Green Bay and should leave it at that.

  • I can't tell you how many perfectly happy days have turned sour simply because I had to get my car out of the Route 59 train station parking lot.

What is it about after-work driving in a parking lot that turns so many people into idiots?

Any commute-related stress I experience during the day can usually be traced back to the 5 10 minutes it takes to navigate through that circus of the insane.

  • I'm as much a meat-lover as the next red-blooded American male, but even I shuddered a bit when I looked into a bag Heather brought home from grocery shopping and saw this:

    That's a lot of burger
    That's a lot of burger.

  • If you gathered every nervous tic, quirky habit, and personality trait that absolutely rubs me the wrong way and wrapped them together in one person you would have a guy who works in our office.

I've never met anyone who could so consistently get under my skin by just being who they are.

Gah! I hope he's sick tomorrow.

  • I don't know where I stumbled upon this image using some scraggly imitation Peanuts characters to illustrate some of the ruminations on happiness by philosopher John Stuart Mill, but I think its a good way to balance out a '5 Things I Think' that seemed to possess an undercurrent of negativity.

    John Stuart Mills explained

    Here's to happiness.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think this may be one of the greatest baseball promotions ever:
Bellies and BaseballsFor generations, it has been said that Brooklynites have been "born into baseball." This summer, that term may be more literal than ever before. On Sunday, July 19th at 5pm, the Brooklyn Cyclones are hosting Bellies & Baseball: A Salute to Pregnancy, -- presented by Palmer's -- and inviting expectant parents to participate in a variety of themed activitiesincluding a special prize for anyone who gives birth at the game!
Make sure to take a look at the activities they have planned. Hysterical.

And I love that they end their press release with this quote from Cyclones General Manager, "If you want to be involved in Bellies & Baseball but youre not pregnant yet, theres still time!"

  • I have never been part of more agonizing and frustrating launch of website redesign as the one I am currently embroiled in.

It's been over a week and we are still trying to chase down problems that appear to only exist in production. We cannot replicate the problems we see on the live website in our QA environment, so we have to hunt down and diagnosis the problem on a live, active website.

  • As much as I hated the Red Wings ending the Blackhawks quest for the Stanley Cup, I think I still would rather see Detroit win over Pittsburgh.

On a related note: The NHL may be experiencing a bit of a fan re-awakening over the last two seasons, but thats going to stall out if the NHL cant find themselves a better national TV deal.

  • I think there are some breath-taking photographs in the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year 2008.

There are also some really stupid ones.

  • Do you think how the woman is modeling this chair is how the designer intended people to sit in it?
    The Chair
If so, what happens when I buy a bunch of these chairs to replace the dining room chairs at our house?

    5 Things I Think
  • Ceilings would be the easiest part of a room to paint if you didn't have to do the whole job with your arms above you head and your neck all craned back.

  • I think this pretty much sums up the reaction I receive when completing any home repair.

    06.02.09 Wondermark

  • For a team that still seems to be struggling to get on track for what is supposed to be another Central Division winning season, I don't think the Cubs can afford to have Reed Johnson sitting on the bench. He doesn't just make the Cubs better at the plate, but he supplies great defense in the field.

I'd sit Milton Bradley and see how far Reed can go.

  • I know that I am under a self-imposed moratorium on adding to my collection of Dickens' Village Christmas houses until we have more space to display them properly, but I sure would love to be able to find a spot for "Jones & Co. Brush & Basket Shop" somewhere.

Jones & Co. Brush & Basket Shop
Though, "48 Doughty St, Home to Charles Dickens" would be fun to have also.

  • I haven't had an opportunity to read the article yet, but from this pull-quote I saw while flipping through this week's Newsweek I think I will enjoy reading their look at the Cult of O.
Some of the many experts who cross her (Orpah Winfrey) stage offer interesting and useful information (props to you, Dr. Oz). Others gush nonsense. Oprah, who holds up her guests as prophets, can't seem to tell the difference
If there is anyone who I think is too big for their britches, it would be Oprah.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think Its peculiar that it only takes one additional day off added to the regular two-day weekend in this case the three days off for Memorial Day weekend for me to completely become comfortable with the idea of not having to go into work anymore.

I knew I only had three days off, but I was still sulking around Monday night because I had to back to work the next day.

At least its a short week.

  • I dont like the Chicago Blackhawks chances in this series. I would be shocked shocked if the series returned to Chicago. I expect the Red Wings to finished things off Wednesday night.

  • Wolfram | Alpha this site is so many ways awesome, I can hardly believe it.

And it is the perfect foil to Fact Unchecked

  • I dont get to watch 30 Rock nearly as much as I would like, but I have seen it enough to be able to laugh out loud while reading through everything Tracy Morgans character said during the shows third season.

  • I think Ive found a hero I can look up to Stephen Pastis. He is the person I want to be.

    5 Things I Think
  • With all due respect to my wife, who is a fabulous cook, I think my brother-in-law makes the best baked beans Ive tasted.

Dudes got a lousy taste in baseball teams, but he knows how to add some great taste to a plain ole can of beans.

  • What do you think Bing Crosby ice cream tasted like?

    Bing Crosby ice cream box
    Im guessing vanilla.

Smooth and simple, and he works with just about anything.

  • I read artist Robert Ullmans Atomic Bomb Bikini blog regularly. Every year he picks the Stanley Cup playoff games with accompanying illustrations, but I never check to see how accurate his predictions are.

None the less, I think Im going to find solace in his breakdown of the Blackhawks Red Wings match-up while watching Game 2 tonight. Not just because of his shared dislike for the Red Wings, but because of the great illustration he did.

    Blackhawks over Red Wings

  • Considering that I was born in 1972, I found a lot to relate to in Raph Kosters post arguing that being born in 1971 was the perfect time to be born a geek.

    An excerpt:
    # I got to high school when PCs were becoming ubiquitous.

    # I got to college when Macs were on Apple campuses, and actually useful.

    # And when you had no choice but to use libraries for research, so I actually learned what real research is.

    # And I was too young to feel cynical about Dead Poets Society.

    # I got onto the Internet after it was tiny, but before it was mass market. So I got to see and use most of the tools and software that were key to its evolution, as they were used, then replaced, then discarded. Pine, gopher, Usenet, Mozilla

  • I think this is the ugliest ad I have ever seen on a web page.

    ugliest web ad ever
    (Shudder)

Thats just creepy and I dont think "creepy" was what their marketing team was going for.

    5 Things I Think
  • I like the advent of self check-out in stores and self check-in at airports. The more ways I get to stay in control of what I need to do, the better.

The problem is that now I have to deal with individual peoples stupidity.

A company can always overcome stupidity behind the counter be changing its training or hiring practices.

Theres nothing that can be done about the slow minded yahoos who are afraid of technology yet still choose to lumber through the painfully simple touch screen display of a CVS check-out station.

And I think there are others who would agree with me on this.

  • I think one of the great joys of life is listening to the soloist sing the National Anthem before a Chicago Blackhawks game.

Even on TV its a great experience.

  • Ive only seen her in Waitress and Bedtime Stories, but I think I have a crush on Keri Russell.

    Kerri Russell

  • Is Lebron James better than Michael Jordan? That's what I find myself thinking about while watching highlights from the Cleveland Cavaliers' run through the playoffs this spring.

I haven't heard or seen any of the sports media talking heads broach this subject, but I have to think that with a little time and maybe a championship or two that talk should rise to the surface.

Maybe it already has and I'm just not aware of it or maybe in general discussion has moved beyond who will be the next "Michael Jordan" to "who will be the next dominate player in the NBA."

  • Pepsi Throwback When the Chicago Tribune put the Pepsi-Cola Throwback into a taste test against regular Pepsi-Cola (I know this is the sort of hard-hitting journalism that will keep the newspapers relevant for another 100 years), one of the comments related to Pepsi Throwback was, "Now this tastes the way Pepsi should."

Their reaction to the regular Pepsi-Cola was, "Too syrupy."

I've avoided Pepsi-Cola for years because I thought it was too syrupy tasting. I think I'd like to give this Pepsi Throwback a try while it's in stores.

    5 Things I Think
  • I think its unbelievably cheap for an upscale hotel to charge people staying at their hotel for internet access. Yet that is exactly what I am forced to do in Atlanta.

I'm attending an email conference for the third year in a row, and this time I finally decided to stay at the hotel associated with the conference center. The hotel is a posh-posh resort run by Marriott. They charge $16 for 24 hours of internet access. The hotel I stayed at the last two years which was five minute drive away gave me Wi-Fi Internet access for free and was nearly hundred dollars cheaper per night.

This is last time I stay at this resort.

  • I think pencils by Jos Luis Garca-Lpez are a thing of beauty.

  • I want me some Ho-Ho Fruit Kabobs

  • A glass-bottom Skydeck on the Sears Tower is one of the best ideas for improving Chicago that Ive heard in a long time.

    glass-bottom Skydeck
I can't wait for this to open and get Ian, Emma, and Zoe up there. It will be a blast.

  • I think Juanmanuels art is wonderful.
